Language proficiency
SLAM - University of Milan Language Centre manages 3-credit advanced language proficiency tests for French, English, Spanish and German for students of the Political, Economic and Social Sciences Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes, and for the Master's degree in Environmental and Food Economics (EFE), which belongs to the area of Agricultural and Food Sciences.
➲ Please note that these language assessment tests are available to students enrolled in the EFE degree course from the academic year 2025/26 onwards and can be taken starting from the second year, as indicated in the relevant Programme Description.
The required levels are the following:
- French: B2
- Advanced English: C1 (not applicable to PPPA, MHR and EFE)
- Spanish: B2
- German: B1
If you already hold a language certificate accepted by the University, obtained no more than three years ago and certifying proficiency at a level equal to or higher than the required one, please send it to SLAM via the InformaStudenti platform ("Language test" category, option "Language assessments" or "Advanced language assessments"). If the certificate is valid, SLAM will enter the language assessment as "passed" in your academic records. Please note that the certificate must certify language proficiency in all the following skills: oral comprehension (listening), written comprehension (reading), oral production (speaking) and written production (writing).
If you do not have a valid language certificate, you will have to sit a placement test. Test sessions are held according to the schedule published on the "Other Foreign Languages" homepage.
If you have registered for the test but are unable to take it on your booked date, you are required to cancel your registration via UNIMIA before registration closes. In the event of unforeseen circumstances on the day of the test, due to medical or work-related reasons or disruptions to public transport, appropriate supporting documentation (e.g. a medical certificate) must be submitted within one week of the test date. Students who fail to cancel their registration in time or do not provide a valid justification for their absence will not be permitted to retake the test for the same language within the same academic year.
You can sit the test in your chosen language only once per academic year.
Students who pass the test at the required level will receive the corresponding language assessment credits. Those who fail to achieve the required level will be offered an optional 40-hour language course, organised by SLAM during the third trimester / second semester. The course will be run only if the minimum number of participants is met. For those who choose to take the course, attendance is compulsory. The course culminates in an on-campus test. Students who fail to attend at least 75% of classes will not be admitted to the end-of-course test, but may retry the placement test in the following academic year.
Language assessment in Advanced English (3 credits)
This test can be taken only by second-year and third-year students.
First-year students who achieve a C1 or C2 level on the English Placement test can request automatic recognition of the credits for the advanced English assessment by contacting SLAM through the InformaStudenti platform ("Language test" category, option "Advanced language assessments").
Only students who achieve the B2 level at the placement test or students who submit a B2 certificate are entitled to attend the Advanced Anglo-American course.
➲ Please note that the Advanced English language proficiency test is not valid for the fulfillment of the English OFA (Additional Learning Requirement) required by Bachelor's degree programmes.
The OFA can only be fulfilled by sitting the Placement Test by December of the first year, or by submitting a valid language certificate among those accepted by the University.
